You did the right thing. Hopefully law enforcement can cool this situation down. If you believe these threats will actually be carried out, you might want to lay low until police have the situation in hand.
This is a police issue. A lawyer can't really help beyond getting a restraining order, which you can do yourself.

Law-enforcement will act on a credible threat. Depending on where you live and their manpower, they can also patrol your neighborhood for a few days to see if the sky shows up and tries anything. Other than that, you have done the right thing and there’s nothing further to do. Buying a gun is a very bad idea, because you could find yourself being charged with homicide.
Protection, on the other hand, can be purchased in the form of a large dog. The problem with that is you can’t get rid of the dog when the problem goes away. However it’s been shown that that’s better protection that a gun.
Making a police report was the right thing to do. Beyond that, you can request a restraining order yourself through civil court. Depending on your relationship to the person, this would be either a domestic violence restraining order or a civil harassment restraining order. Your local courthouse will have all the forms you need in the self-help room. If you are scared for your safety, you need to stay away from this person and block all contact until you have legal orders protecting you.
