I'm currently on my OPT extension (its a work permit for STEM graduates) and it expires a yr from now oct 2015. I got married recently and intend to apply for my Green card early next yr. I would like to know if it is necessary to apply for a new EAD card since it is rather useless at this point. I would like to know if it is possible to also apply for the H1-b visa while my green card application is pending since my employer is willing to petition on my behalf in April 2015.
Talk with an attorney. This could be very easy for you. It is a standard procedure for adjusting your status. Why is it useless to have a completely general employment authorization so you can break away from the very restrictive OPT/H1B path? Particularly as there is no extra fee to complete and file the form.
If you have married a U.S. citizen, you can file for adjustment of status at this time (also file for the EAD since you are paying for it). You can be a resident possibly before April 1, 2015 and definitely by October 2015. Hence, you do not need to ponder the idea of the H-1b status and be concerned about that status.
