You can ask the judge about the process to have an attorney assigned to you.

You should ask the court to appoint a lawyer free of charge assuming you qualify.

If you qualify, the Court may appoint an attorney to represent you. And, it's Petit Larceny, not Petty Larceny.

First, if you are indigent, you might consider a visit to the Legal Aid Society in your borough or Legal Services in your county. Second, if you choose to wait until your court date, which I would not recommend, you request that the court appoint you free counsel or a lawyer from Legal Aid/Services. It’s always better to walk into court with an attorney who has an understanding of the case. This way you reduce the possibility of a negative surprise.
By answering questions, I or my Firm do not represent you or agree to take your case. If you wish to retain us, please contact us.
You definitely need an attorney. You can apply for free counsel. The court will provide information on how to do that, however it is income dependent. The phone number for Orange County Legal Aid is 845-291-2454.
If that doesn’t work out.....Many private attorneys will consider payment plans though, so that many be an option for you. If you have any Questions, feel free to call my office. 845-290-2492.
Best of Luck in your case!
