I informed a hospital of text messages being sent out by one of their employees which I believed to be a HIPAA violation. The texts included patients' names, their medical ailment, and whether they were being admitted there, transported to a higher care facility, DOA, etc. The employee has been terminated. Based on things that are getting back to me, I believe they are going to retaliate with legal action. Am I protected by the HIPAA whistleblower law or does that only apply to employees who report employers and/or co-workers? Thank you for any insight you can provide.
