I went to renew my Nebraska license and I was told Rhode Island had a hold on it I called Rhode Island DMV and they reported to me that I had a DUI back into 1991 as far as I can remember I completed all that required through the courts. Now Rhode Island is saying that I need to take a defensive driving course in counseling that was 28 years ago I am now 62 years old why is the wait 28 years to contact me
Rhode Island can put a hold on your license but you should be able to check the records and possibly avoid the course. Call an experienced Rhode Island DUI Attorney.. Most will provide you with a free consultation.
Rhode Island does not have a procedure for the certification of specialization by lawyers.
Yes, RI can send notice to other states that, according to their records, you never completed the requirements of a DUI conviction no matter how old. I’ve seen several recent clients come to me for the same issue. It’s up to the state you live in to decide whether or not they will deny you a license or renewal based on this info but most honor the request from the other states, particularly for alcohol related offenses. The driving course costs approximately $300+ dollars plus a reinstatement fee in RI and possibly Nebraska. If you have paperwork or proof you completed that, that needs to go to RI DMV so you can get a clearance to get your driving privileges restored.
