Yes people pretend to be crazy. However, once his attorney files motions pertaining to those actions, he will be evaluated by doctors. The doctors can tell when someone is faking. You will need to keep in touch with the prosecutor if you want the charges to proceed, or his attorney if you do not. Both will be able to tell you the status of his case based on his actions.
