I was caught for shoplifting in walmart yesterday for 128$ . The walmart security caught me and handedover me to the police. They had me to sign on few documents and took my id proof and my picture at both walmart security and police departments. The police asked me to summon in the court 2 weeks later. I heard that there would be some fine but no jail as it was my first time. Is it true?? Di i need to have a lawyer inorder to go to the court. I am also a non immigrant and a student. Does this effect me anywhere ??
You need to retain an attorney who practices both immigration law and criminal defense. Immigration is a very complex area of law. It is a lot more than merely filling out forms. You need to retain an immigration attorney to handle all immigration proceedings. This prevents errors that can sometimes prove costly and may even be irreversible. You should always seek to obtain the best attorney that you can afford and not let geographic restrictions stand in the way. Some immigration attorneys will charge a consultation fee, however those that do so, will give full credit if you retain their law firm. Do not let geographic restrictions prevent you from obtaining the best possible attorney. Pick the best lawyer you can find and remember one rule: a good lawyer is generally never cheap, and a cheap lawyer is generally never good so don't choose based on price. Good luck

You need a shoplifting attorney first and then you need an immigration attorney second if you are an immigrant since you did not say you were a US citizen. A few of us practice both areas of law. Yes you can go to jail for even a first offense, but it is rare. What is the worst part is that you will have a criminal record and this criminal record will effect your job choices, your education, your travel to foreign countries for the rest of your life and even an expungment after your case is over will not block all of these problems. You need to immediately hire a good NJ Shoplifting Lawyer immediately and get yourself a good defense. Remember just because you did the crime does not mean that your guilty.

Does being labeled a thief hurt you in the future? I read your post to say you are a citizen of the US. If you are not you have immigration problems that should be discussed with an immigration attorney. Although many attorneys practice in both criminal and immigration areas you may do well to speak to an attorney that practices in just one or the other since both require expertise hard to acquire if your time is split between different areas of practice. Most criminal defense attorneys work closely with immigration attorneys and vice versa. If you are no a citizen you may not safely enter a CD program. If you are a citizen you can. This program would dismiss the case after a year of probation but it requires a guilty plea which hurts a non-citizen. With an attorney you should be able to clear you record for normal background checks before you finish school.
You definitely need a lawyer. Any conviction, if if you only pay a fine or if the State does not consider it a conviction, could result in loss of your student visa.
