Question

Do I have to publish my name change in Michigan?

I am changing my fist and last name for religious reasons. My state of Michigan requires name changes to be published in a local newspaper. I am a victim of domestic violence and stalking. I have an active restraining order against an ex boyfriend that is renewable if I choose in 3 years. I do not want him to know my new name. Is there anyway I can change my name without publishing it?

A request for name change requires publication.

This is a general response to an inquiry and is not intended to create a lawyer-client relationship in any manner.

You can always petition the court for a name change. Although it is in the courts discretion to allow a name change it is usually granted. It the name change is to avoid creditors and for any fraudulent reason the court will deny any name change. Michigan does require publication of the name change.

If you have questions about the name change requirement, I would encourage you to contact an attorney in your area. The publishing requirement is to give notice to creditors, etc. You need to prove you are not changing your name for fraudulent reasons, therefore, I would suggest you find an attorney.

Michigan offers an exception to victims of abuse, stalking or identity theft. I found this out. Thanks anyway.

despite the fact that I have never heard of any religion that requires you to change your mind, you still must comply with all statutory requirements. Your attorney may be able to offer some additional assistance to you.

Many people change their names when converting to a new religion. Islam, Christianity, Buddhism to name a few. Also through research I have found that if you can show proof that publishing a name change in Michigan would be harmful to you; you do not have to publish it. Thanks anyway.
