I live in Alabama. My son attends a public middle school in Tuscaloosa county. He was assaulted by another student, (a closed fist hit to the head and shoulder). He had to defend himself or suffer further injury, so he hit back. Neither were seriously injured, although it remains to be seen if his neck is injured. (He mentioned the hit bent his neck over). The school suspended them BOTH for 3 days. I think it is unfair, and I want it removed from his record.
A formal procedure for challenging the suspension should be set out in the student handbook. You should ensure you strictly comply with the procedure in challenging the suspension. Good luck.
Spend some time with the Board of Education's Code of Conduct. There are usually procedures to appeal. They often ignore their own rules, so be ready to quote them to them when you make contact.
