My girlfriend got us a dog while we were together, we didn’t leave together and she worked weekend nights so I had her at my house 3/7 days of the week and escalated to 5/7 of the week. When we broke up she told me to keep the dog since she cheated on me and thought it was the least she could do after everything. I’ve started dating someone else and now she wants the dog back because of it. Her name is the primary owner at the vet and I’m registered as the spouse. Is there anyway I can legally keep the dog or do I have to give her back?
That depends on the dog’s preference. The judge will likely interview the dog in chambers. (kidding lol) Seriously, since your girlfriend gave you the dog, it’s a gift and you shouldn’t have to return him or her. Since the dog was voluntarily left with you in your possession, no one can accuse you of stealing it. Of course, it’s possible that your girlfriend may try to sue you to recover the dog, and may deny ever giving the dog to you, so then it would be up to the judge or jury as to who they believe.
