3 months ago I was leaving the large Corporate I work for due to some discriminatory comments about my accent. On 7/31, i got a text from my manager telling me to not leave the company because there was a team interested in hiring me. I withdrew form my job search certain I would get the promotion. Three months goes by and I am told several time the raise would be 20k. They verbally offered me this amount on a Friday, and after I go home tell my husband and family, on monday, they took it back stating they I had “misunderstood” and that the raise would be about 10k only. They also tell me that they could not go any higher than what they were offering me because they did not have in the budget. However, they just hired someone for this same position and they offered this person much more money than they had initiall offered me. I don’t understand why I wasn’t able to get the “real” raise they did offer me since clearly they did have the money to offer to someone else. I moved to a more expensive house and now I do not have the job and in fact I am being treated very poorly in the company. Can you please advise if there is anything I can do about this? Thank you so much!!
Schedule a consultation with an employment attorney. If your employer is paying more for doing the same job to someone of a different gender, race, national origin, etc. then that might well support a claim of unlawful discrimination.
