I have a divorce court date coming up. It’s combined with a restraining order case. Not sure how this works in court. Anyways, could I ask for continuance? I found out that my husband got a lawyer. I don’t have one.
Can’t really afford it much like him since I had no job and he took care of everything. So I’m trying my best to find a lawyer I can afford. But it’s too short notice to find one in a week.
Note the restraining order case is me getting it against him. He was physically abusive. Currently he has a criminal case too because I reported him to the police the last time he hit me.
I'm sorry for what you're going through. Our Family Code section 245 states, in part, that "(b) Either party may request a continuance of the hearing, which the court shall grant on a showing of good cause. The request may be made in writing before or at the hearing or orally at the hearing. The court may also grant a continuance on its own motion." We have legal aid organizations in the L.A. county that provide low and no-cost services for these types of cases. You may want to try contacting the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles or the Harriet Buhai Center for Family Law. Best of luck.
Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not. What determines Avvo Rating?Experience & background
