The position I was fired from, I worked there for 4 + years. In the beginning, I noted on my job application that I had previously been diagnosed with Narcolepsy and suffer from the symptoms of that disorder. I also have had a conversation with the director and we both discussed the need for assistance. The director even mentioned that this particular accommodation was not new because there was someone else (before I worked there) who also had been diagnosed with Narcolepsy. Yet despite this, no accommodation could really work because this place wants you to be working every second of the day. When I tried to use the accommodations it was frowned upon and most times, I had to just give up using the accommodations that would have helped me to be more productive.
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, an employer must offer a reasonable workplace accommodation, so long as you are able to perform the essential job functions. More facts are needed to determine whether an accommodation would have allowed a narcoleptic to perform the essential functions of your job, and what exactly went on between you and the employer. Talk to an attorney. Most offer free consultations. Do so quickly, as an EEOC claim must be filed within a fairly short time.
