ex-wife lives in Oregon and I am from Europe. I have had to pay for all expenses to see my daughter, and this has been going like for the past 6 years. My last vacation with my daughter (she is 7 yo) cost me about $4000 (100% paid by me), just in travel expenses.
she is a doctor with a salary 3 times mine (hers :150k+ working part time!). According to online child support calculators, I should pay her something like $500 per month!! besides, this system says that the less we see our child the more we should pay!! I wish I could see her more often. I just cannot afford it!! I live now in michigan, still way too far to see my daughter even once a month.
$500 par month is totally unfair. What can I do ?
Sir, how much do you think it costs to raise a 7 year old? What portion do you think you should pay? The system does not care much how much your ex makes. It is for you to support your child according to your ability and income. Travel expenses for your parenting time depend largely on who moved. Did you move away from the child or did your ex move the child away from you? I am guessing from your narrative that you moved. Your choice to be away from the child; you pay to come back. Sorry not to be more sympathetic but honestly, your position does not lend it self to sympathy. And by the way, post to Oregon Avvo for specifics about child support law in Oregon.
Your question is not very clear on a few things. I know the mother and child live in Oregon and you are from Europe and live in Michigan but where was the divorce or child custody case started? If it was in Michigan, there is a Michigan Child Support Formula that the court uses to determine how much you would pay. That formula takes into consideration the income of both parents, among other factors. If the courts of Oregon, Europe, or some other place have jurisdiction, you need to be more clear in order to get a better answer. Good Luck!
