My arrest was for domestic violence but the charge through the court was 01 simple assault. Will this charge prohibit me from ever purchasing a firearm again? I have wanted to go hunting for the last 16 years but have been hesitant to even think about it because of the arrest. I want to enjoy this sport again with family and want to know what my options are, thanks.
The answer to your question depends entirely upon what is reflected in your criminal justice record. "Domestic violence" is a "tag," not a charge. If your record reflects a conviction for assault/DV, you are prohibited for life from ever legally possessing a firearm, as the state of the law is now. On the other hand, if the record does not reflect domestic violence associated with an assault conviction, then there is no problem. To find out, you will need to request a copy of your criminal justice record from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation for a small fee.
