I currently work for an employer that has become rude and abusive towards his employees. He marginalizes and demeans employees in front of customers, up to and including threats to fire them. He will assign a task, pull you off that task for another, then berate you for not completing the first. I am at a point I cannot stand it anymore. I have a good chance for another job after the first of the year, but I need to get through the rest of the month. Can I get unemployment for this short time? Do I have any other recourse?
Sorry your having so many problems. Unemployment is tricky. You can get unemployment benefits if you quit but you have to be able to show that quitting is attributable to your employer. Meaning, you have to complain to the employer about how he is treating you and give the employer an opportunity to correct the situation. If the employer does not correct the situation, then you can reason and at least have an argument for collecting unemployment. Its risky. Most likely you would have to fight to get your benefits so its not like you can quit and immediately receive benefits. Might be best just to tough it out through the holidays and leave when your new position is available. Good luck.
