My husband is a police officer injured on the job. He worked second shift and is on desk duty until he heals. Work is constantly skirting around restrictions and demanding he do things outside his restrictions. The bigger issue is that they don't have a set schedule and call him in at any time, even his days off and we don't have childcare those days. It is causing a financial hardship as well as the threat I might lose my job trying to accommodate a schedule he's never had before.
This sounds like a communication problem. Your husband should contact human resources and the union. One or both of those sources should solve the problem. Although the law generally permits employers to set an employee's schedule, employers cannot retaliate against employees that seek worker's compensation benefits or deny reasonable requests to accommodate a temporary disability.
