A company is calling me saying they are trying to mediate a civil case filled against me for an old payday loan from 2012. They are saying they were hired for 72 hrs to try and settle if I don't respond within that time they will turn the case back over to litigations for fraud and breach of contract. I don't remember getting this loan and have been receiving a ton of calls like this from different companies for diff payday loans every month. I did get online payday loans in the past but I'm sure they are paid off. I called my old bank and there looking into my old acct to see if anything is there. I googled the phone number and there's some things that say scam! So I'm just hesitant on what to do. Can u be charged with fraud over an old payday loan thou? Please advise
First of all when a "mediation" company calls you to mediate a debt with a lender or debt collector, its a scam. Even the so-called legitimate mediators in fact work for the debt collectors.
Second of all, this one screams scam!
Finally, if you've received this level of harassment over a loan you don't recall taking out, that means your name's on a list that has been sold and resold to different scam artists.
Next time a call comes through, advise them that they need to contact you within five days, in writing, and verify the debt, in writing, to you.
I would not personally pay anything to someone who called with this kind of weird phone call.
