I've been dating this girl over the internet - her 13, nearly 14, me 15, nearly 16. Her mom and brother have disliked me since the beginning, but until today, nothing has happened. Today, she told me how I was influencing and isolating my girlfriend from her family. Several of the texts from my girlfriend are telling me how her brother was hitting her, or her mom starting arguments and insulting her. They've threatened to contact my school and get me expelled, sue me for 'tearing up their family', etc, etc.
I've never said or done anything negative about them, except agreeing with my girlfriend and trying to comfort her when she was upset. Now, they've blown this entire thing out of proportion and are making threats and insulting my person by calling me several names including retarded, etc, etc.
At your age do you really need these kinds of problems? This will obviously haunt you for as long as you date her.
It's doubtful they can do anything to you based on the facts you have stated. There is nothing illegal for a 15 year old to talk to a 13 year old. But you are communicating over the internet and that can lead to dangerous things. By that, I mean, being anonymous (or at least not face to face) can lead y'all to start having inappropriate discussions. That could then lead to posting of photos that are inappropriate. The minute you cross that line and start discussing sexual, or otherwise inappropriate, discussions or photos, you then open yourself up to possible legal action. And then, yes, they could possibly cause you problems. I would add that if your online girlfriend is lying about her age, and she is really under 13, the penalties for sexual contact or such communication can skyrocket. You could face serious jail time for anything sexual if she is under 13.
Finally, there is nothing that would prevent her parents from forbidding her to have any contact with you.
Nothing in this communication should be construed as creating an attorney-client relationship. I provide this service for educational purposes only. I will take no action on your behalf unless you have hired me and a written retainer agreement is signed. I am licensed only in Tennessee and I strongly suggest you consult with an attorney in your city and state as Statute of Limitation deadlines can limit your recovery.
