I have a friend who got baker acted for a suicide attempt. They were released before the 72 hours. Nothing actually happened, but the police were already called and they were placed in protective custody. The facility wouldn't accept the persons insurance and was trying to transfer them but couldn't find a facility that did so they evaluated them and they were released.
yes, they can, but it will be difficult. Your friend will need to be able to demonstrate that he is mentally competent and emotionally stable.
