My friend is on disability due to liver disease. Her husband is working and also her main caregiver. When she is hospitalized for days with emergency issues (blood sugar in 500's, etc) he has to take unpaid time off of work. Can they or a friend or family member start a GoFundMe page to help raise funds to cover the lost wages without it effecting her disability?
Presuming that your friend receives SSD and not SSI, which seems likely given her husband is employed, then a GoFundMe page will have no impact upon her benefits.
answers to questions are for general purposes only and do not establish an attorney-client relationship.
If your friend is receiving SSI disability, the money raised would likely affect eligibility. If she is receiving SSDI benefits, it likely would not affect the benefits since the money raised is likely passive income. I would verify the same with the Social Security Administration before doing anything.
