I received a 3 day notice to pay or quit and paid the next day in full ,4 days later I was served another 3 day notice to pay or quit.
It is legal to serve more than one 3 day notice in a one month period. Your landlords problem is the first notice was paid in full. At that time your balance became zero. He will have a difficult time showing where or how the additional money being demanded came from. All of this of course assumes both notices were 3 day notices to pay rent or quit. If one of the notices is a cure covenant or quit, the outcome is very different.
A proper response would require a much more thorough and complete investigation into the history and facts set forth in your question. Any statements provided by me regarding your inquiry is nothing more than an opinion, and does not represent legal advice or create a client relationship.
