Somebody filed a civil lawsuit on me for calling them a thief on my Facebook page.

Absolutely. Saying someone has committed a crime when they have not, is automatically defamation.

I concur with the recommendation of my distinguished colleague attorney H. Scott Aalsberg. Yes, that will be a sufficient basis to file a lawsuit. However, defamation is not easy to prove and there must be a direct link between the defamation and actual money damages caused by the defamatory statement. There are limited exceptions to this. Yes, since you accused them of committing a crime and published that accusation to the public on their Facebook page. However, they would have to prove a connection to damages suffered. Also worth noting is that, if your assertion is true, that is a defense you can use to defeat their claim. Before becoming an attorney I worked in the media and came across this issue often. You need an attorney to defend you in this lawsuit.
