Im a victim of domestic abuse and my "friend" offered to rent me a room to get out of the shelter. The Jewish Family Services assisted me w a check for $1275 and I paid $455 in cash for 1st, last & security. I'm on the 5th week here. She refused to give me a key and has locked me out several times. I am not allowed to cook or use the pool now. She is harrasing me while screaming for me to get out n threatening to kick my door down. She first said 30 days then 7 now tomorrow. She says my stuff will be out when i get home tomorrow from work. She also refuses to return my $$. Im being harrased n now threatened. What do i do?? Im trying to find a place but need time.
Since you paid rent, the "room mate" is likely a landlord to you and would be required to evict you. Given the situation - your best bet is to terminate the tenancy and move elsewhere ASAP, regardless of who is right or wrong. After that, candidly, first and foremost, there is a clear and inexplicable trend here of you being involved as the victim of claimed abuses and harassment in a very short period of time. As we have no means to examine this issue without more and accurate facts, the FIRST thing you need to address is finding a qualified counselor to address how you keep finding yourself in such position and whether there are other unrevealed factors related this controversy so these can be addressed and avoided in the future.
