I am a 17 year old from Massachusetts, and due to an abusive home life I can't stay here anymore. I filed one court case against my parents a year ago due to physical abuse, and since then they have not physically abused me, but they have been emotionally abusing me to the point where I don't feel safe here anymore. I would like to leave for at least a week to live with a friend and get time to process my situation, but my parents have threatened to report me as missing or falsely charge my friends parents for kidnapping me. I am leaving for college in a month and I would like to be emancipated from my parents, but I don't know how this will affect college.
Your parents would not be making a false report. As a minor, your parents have to give you permission to stay somewhere else. They can legally report you as missing or running away if you leave without their permission, and they are correct, that your friend's parents can face charges for harboring a runaway (see here: https://malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/PartI/TitleXVII/Chapter119/Section63A).
