I believe that you could take them down. In every lease there is an implied covenant of quiet enjoyment, which allows you to use and possession of the premises. Since the yard is part of the premises, you have a right to use that yard for any legal purpose without interference from the landlord. One thing to keep in mind is that this is a very hotly contested election, so butting heads with your landlord can be a sensitive area.
