Now for an answer from a FL attorney practicing Employment Law.
An employer can fire you for making a mistake.
Employers that try to tax their employees for mistakes run the risk of paying that employee less than the Minimum Wage for the pay period in question. Paying less than the Minimum Wage is a violation of Federal and Florida State law, sometimes resulting in double damages to the employee.
So direct answer - Can they? Well, they can try. Should they? It is probably not smart.
