i'm a nj resident, but recently received a speeding ticket in NY. i pleaded guilty and paid the fine. however, i was recently sent a fine from the state of NY requiring me to pay a driver's assessment fee of $300 for accumulating 6 points in the past 18 months. is there anything i can do to avoid paying, such as taking a driver's safety course?
I do not know. In NJ out of state drivers are subjecrt to NJ surcharges by case law. I do not know if this applies in reverse. If NY suspends your driving privledges (they cannot suspend your license) NJ may suspend your license via the interstate compact. If the charge is legal and you do not pay it may effect your credit rating as well. i would ask a NY attorney.
You may want to consult a NY attorney about this. The NYDMV website may also provide some guidance on this issue.
No. You must pay this assessment fee or NYS will suspend your driving privileges in NYS. If caught driving while your driving privileges are suspended you WILL be arresstted. This is a hassle you simply dont want. Pay the fine and keep proof. Taking certain defensive driving courses will reduce up to four points off of your NY abstract and may help with insurance costs but doesn't negate the need to pay this assessment fee.
