Avvo doesn't pay us for these responses, and I'm not your lawyer just because I answer this question or respond to any follow-up comments. If you want to hire me, please contact me. Otherwise, please don't expect a further response. We need an actual written agreement to form an attorney-client relationship. I'm only licensed in CA and you shouldn't rely on this answer, since each state has different laws, each situation is fact specific, and it's impossible to evaluate a legal problem without a comprehensive consultation and review of all the facts and documents at issue.
Without more information, it is difficult to answer your question. If you are coming to the US on a crewperson visa, you cannot change your status so you would not be able to change to a tourist visa in order to go visit your friends. You would need to return to your country of residence abroad and apply for a tourist visa there.
Please note that this answer is for general information purposes only and must not be construed as legal advice, nor is it meant to create an attorney-client relationship. It is your responsibility to consult with an attorney to review your case in detail and provide specific legal advice based on the consultation. Legal advice can be given only after a full consultation involving a discussion of all relevant facts.
That will not be possible if you are simply admitted as a crew member on a transit visa.
