I was given a dog to see if I can give her a good home and the owners dont want to fully let me have her they want me to keep her and pay out if pocket to house and feed her tell they find another home for her how long do I keep her before she is legally mine
You are letting your kind nature be taken advantage of. You are providing free board and care apparently by agreement with them. You can say you will no longer take care of the dog for free and they have to either give you the dog outright or reimburse you for the past care and pay for the care going forward. If you have this conversation, you should immediately put whatever agreement you come to in writing. In such circumstances, you must also be prepared that they may demand the dog be returned to them.
