I have been working at this retail shop as a manager for 7 months under boss A. About a week ago boss A sold the shop to boss B. I did my best to tolerate the new bosses rude behavior but it started taking a toll on my mental and physical health. Ten minutes before I have to pull a double shift I quit through text. The next day I hear from a former coworker that he replaced me a couple of hours after I quit and is threatening to sue me and is accusing me of stealing money without evidence. Can he sue me for quitting on him even if I didn’t sign any contracts or fill out any employee forms under boss A and B?
Texas, like nearly every other state, is an "at-will" employment state. That means, unless you have an employment contract that says otherwise, you can be terminated at any time, for any reason (or even no reason at all), and without notice. Unless you can show that the real reason for your termination is BECAUSE OF your race, sex, religion, national origin, age, or disability, or that you were terminated in retaliation for exercising some legal right, the termination is legal.
The flip side of that is that you can QUIT any time, for any reason, and without notice, and there's nothing your boss can do about it.
