i had someone break into my home and steal my 42 inch t.v., my xbox 360, about ten games, two controllers , all the corresponding chords, my girlfriends phone and some cologne,,,this values well over a thousand dollars..i notified the police and it has been over two weeks and they tell me that i wont get my things back, but the kid will get arrested MAYBE..i need assistance on how to get the money for my things back because he stole almost everything i have and theres no way he can get away with this . the police arent doing anything and wont give me guidance, i have called the county and they wont help, i have eywitnesses that watched the kid stealing my things and putting them in his car. i just need to know WHAT TO DO please someone tell me what i can possibly do what are my options?
The first answer is you can buy insurance. This is what people do so they can "get money" when their stuff gets stolen.
Second, if they do end up charging the kid, you should be able to get damages as restitution. That should be part of any sentence he gets.
Third, you could sue him. The practical problem about suing him is that people with money don't tend to steal TVs. So, you could get a judgment against this guy and never collect it; that means that suing him may not be worth that effort and expense.
