The California Labor Code specifically prohibits blacklisting. Under the statutory definition, blacklisting can be committed only by a former employer, and occurs when the former employer “after having discharged an employee … or after an employee has voluntarily left such service, by any misrepresentation prevents or attempts to prevent the former employee from obtaining employment.” It is legal for the former employer to furnish a truthful statement about why it discharged you.
If you believe that you can meet the legal standard for blacklisting, you have the option of filing a civil lawsuit against Central Casting. You should think seriously about the negative consequences you might be facing if you file such a lawsuit, though. I don’t usually warn people off from asserting their legal rights, but the fact is, movie extras are a dime a dozen in Hollywood, and Mr. Doland is correct when he says that if you file this suit, you could be shooting yourself in the foot in a big way. You might be guaranteeing that you will never work in the Hollywood entertainment industry again.
