It sounds like your husband was very recently sentenced. The process of designating him to a prison (the process is done in Texas at a former military base) can take several weeks. During that time you may not be able to find out where he is. I suggest that you keep checking the BOP locator, and stay in contact with his attorney. Once he is designated, it may take awhile for the information to be made available because the BOP and marshals service do not advertise where and when an inmate will be moved. I know this is hard, and I sympathize, but if you are patient, you will eventually find out.
The response I have provided is general in nature, and does not create an attorney-client relationship. My practice is based in Rhode Island, and the law and practice in other states or jurisdictions may be different.
It takes about 6-8 weeks from sentencing for a federal inmate to show up on the inmate locator website. That website is
The reason is that the inmate is not taken directly to the prison where he or she will stay. Inmates travel by bus from the lockups where they are held at the time of sentencing. They may stay there for up to a week or so before leaving, and they may be transferred to a central location in the state for bus pickup. Once they get on the bus they travel to a temporary holding facility, but along the way they stop to pick up more prisoners. Eventually they get to the holding facility where they stay until they are designated to a particular federal prison. They then travel, usually by bus, to that prison. Once at prison they are processed in over the course of a couple of days. All of this takes about 6-8 weeks. If it has been significantly longer than 6-8 weeks call your congressman to find out where he is.
