I work in the health care field as a nurse anesthetist. Earlier this week a colleague of mine approach me about conversation he had with other staff members. Apparently my other co workers have told many people in my department and outside my department that I was responsible for placing some kind of listening device in our private break room to record people's conversations. My name was not specifically mentioned, but my initials were. There is no other person in my department or in surgery with my initials. I did not place any kind of device and I have no knowledge of anything related to this event. This has severely hurt my reputation and has cost me a great amount of anxiety. I met with my boss on the morning I heard about this. And she is looking into it.
Suing your co-workers probably would create more anxiety than its worth. Best option is likely to let your boss put an end to this and just move on.
I would continue to pursue it through your employer as the employer is creating a hostile work environment if they know someone has been taping their employees and they do nothing about it. As far as slander is concerned, since you have not stated how you are damaged specifically or the content of the statements, it is unknown whether you have a case for slander, as opinion is not defamation.
I agree with my colleagues. Working on the issue through the employer is likely the easiest course to follow as defamation cases can be difficult. Unless the statements qualify as being defamatory per se, a plaintiff needs to prove up damages.
That said, if the matter is not resolved through the employer, you can always consult with an attorney to review your options.
