I would talk to the landlord about what he/she is doing to increase security. Shootings can happen anywhere. As long as the landlord is taking reasonable security precautions, this probably would not be a reason to break the lease. If there is some reason to think that the complex cannot be secured or is inherently unsafe, that would be a different matter.
