I am a non-US World Bank employee. I am exempt from taxation on the compensation I receive from the WB. Do I still have to file my taxes regardless the fact that I am an employee of an international organisation? Can I be exempt from having health care insurance in the US? Or will i have to eventually pay the individual shared responsibility payment, if i decide to reject the healthcare plan in the US?
If you are living in the us and a us citizen or resident alien and do not receive coverage from employer, you are required to have insurance unless you fall within an exemption. Exemptions are generally income based or you are outside the us,. If you are not required to file, then you will not be assessed the shared responsibility payment. However most individuals earning over the the threshold (age dependant) but as little as $10301 requires filing. I am not really clear on how you are exempted from income tax. I would check further with a tax specialist.
If you are living in the US for a certain number of days (generally 183 days), even though you are not a citizen, you would still be taxed on our world wide income. Whether or not you are subject to the health insurance requirements is something you are going to have to determine by seeing if you fall under an exemption to the mandate.
