When you say "separated," I'm guessing that you do NOT mean legally separated, rather just not living together. Which means, they were still married. Normally, a surviving spouse is not liable for the debts incurred by the deceased. In MN, however (and many other states), there is something called the "doctrine of necessities" - spouses are generally held liable for each other's debts for the "necessities of living." Credit cards are becoming especially aggressive about this. They would have to sue the widow personally and establish the doctrine to the courts. Frankly, that is a lot of effort and expense, and it is not widely common that this happens, but it is possible and becoming more frequent.
