Hello. I would like to inquire about the legal matters in regards to an 18 year old leaving their home in the state of New Jersey while still attending their senior year in high school. Is there anything the parents can do to prevent said 18 year old from moving out? Also if this 18 year old plans to move to a new state to stay with another person can that person be charged with anything for housing that individual. Said 18 year old would also like to transfer them self from their current high school to a high school in their soon to be new state in order to graduate.
Yes, an 18 year old can move out. An 18 year old is an adult in most areas in the eyes of the law (but cannot buy alcohol for instance) - so the 18 year old will have legal rights and legal responsibilities. If another party had an improper relationship with the 18 year old before the the 18 year old turned 18 then that person may face some legal issues. The 18 year old should be eligible to enroll at the new high school, but check with the school district to see what its rules are.
And/or go to a family counselor and try to work it out before causing irreparable harm to ongoing family relationships.
