I have a court appointed lawyer she walked away from my case because I won't sign a plea bargain and the judge told me I have until friday to find a paid lawyer and if I don't they will put me in jail until I find one. Can they do that?
You have the right to a trial. No one can force you to plea guilty. If you are innocent, you shouldnt plea guilty just because someone is putting pressure on you.
If you were assigned an attorney, that attorney should do your trial. Its not right for an attorney to work on a case, and not be willing to go all the way.
Public Defenders generally work for an office. Contact the Public Defender office your PD works for right away and speak with the head of the unit your PD is assigned to. Something is not right with the situation as you have presented it here and if your assigned PD has walked away from the case that agency needs to provide you with another lawyer who will represent you...even if it means going to trial.
