im a single parent my father wants me to give some type of legal custody to him over my 8 yr.old son. so that my son would have rights to draw off of my dads socisl security disbility. is there anyway that could be something i would regret doing. i just dont want to ha e any others able to EVER HAVE RIGHTS TO MY SON OTHER THAN MY FATHER AND MYSELF???? HOW HARD OR COSTLY IS THIS TO DO?
Where is the child's biological father? He must be served with a court petition and agree to give grandfather rights to make decisions on behalf of the child. I don't think doing this just to qualify for additional money for grandfather is honest.

Typically, for a grandchild to get SS benefits, several criteria must be met. With a parent alive, there will likely require a full adoption. Not only that, there are other criteria to be met, including having the grandparent be responsible for a certain period of time for a majority of the care. SS is not slack enough to just allow any grandparent to take some rights on paper and start making a grandchild a beneficiary. Check the section for grand kids here: https://www.ssa.gov/people/kids/
