A relative of mine was hit by a car, couldn't work and was eventually evicted, This was 3 years ago. The landlord of the apartment has been calling and texting for the past 3 years to collect that rent. My relative is unable to ever work full time again because of their injury. The apartment has long been rented to someone else for the past 3 years. How long before his harassment becomes illegal or no longer enforceable. I should also mention that this person left America after/because of the accident, they are an American Citizen, they are NOT Mexican.
The landlord provided something and is entitled to be paid for it. Six years then many more if a judgment obtained.

The statute of limitations on contract issues is six (6) years. A lease is a contract, so a landlord has 6 years to file a lawsuit to collect on a debt of unpaid rent. Once the case runs its course and if the landlord wins a judgment against the former tenant, the landlord has up to 20 years thereafter to try to collect on the judgment, which may include levying on bank accounts and personal property as well as the lien created upon real estate owned by the former tenant to satisfy the debt.
