A local to me gravel company i use would send me a bill in the mail shortly after i would pick up gravel from there pit. Once i received the bill i would make the payment as soon as i could over the phone with my debit card. I have paid several gravel bills in full either in person with cash, a mailed in check, or most recently, debit card payment over the phone. This last bill came in a little to high so i investigated it. Its been about a month now since i picked up the gravel for this invoice. They agreed that i was overcharged $80.58 cents for material that wasnt mine and ended up on my bill, then they explained a minimum load charge of $45 which was the case of about $36 over what i expected. still, this didnt add up to the near $200 they overcharged on the invoice. Coincidentally, someone in the accounting office decided on the day i started to dispute the bill, to go ahead and enter the info from my last payment and without any written, or verbal consent or the rundown of the loads of gravel/tickets I had taken which i requested, they went ahead debited the full amount they believed i owed without permission. what do i do? That cant be legal is it?
My suggestion is thi first review the terms of any agreements with the company as far as form of payment and what should happen in the event of disputed charges.
Then, I would quickly report the unauthorized charge thi for debit card to your bank. The bank should open an investigation. They will probably ask if you followed a police rep. Post. They MAY require that you do so before taking action to investigate.
If you didn’t pre-authorize the charges to your debit card, it is not legal. It’s also better to use a credit card not a debit card so your account is more private and you have a gatekeeper between your bills and your money. But always pay the balance in full before the end of the month
