Review or have an attorney review the written terms of your lease. Most leases require a written notification that you will be terminating the lease agreement even though there is a set "end" date for the lease. Without reading your lease, I would guess that a 60 day written notice was required. Most of the leases/rental agreements today have a 30 or 60 day notice clause, depending on the type of lease, commercial or residential. Florida statutes state give guide lines as to the amount of penalties.
If you had issues/problems with the unit regarding living conditions or maintenance you may be able to avoid the extra month rent. Please consult an attorney regarding your specific issue to determine if there are any alternative ways to settle your dispute. Ignoring the issue may only make things worse.

You may be liable, it depends on your contract and the language regarding renewal and notices that are required by you and by the landlord. They may have been required to send you a reminder notice that you needed to send a renewal or non-renewal notice. You may be excused from sending a non-renewal letter if they were required to send a reminder and failed to.
If you are moved out now, then it is too late to bring up maintenance requests. If you are a tenant and have a maintenance request, you should follow the landlord's / management's procedures to report it. If it is a major request or you are concerned about it, then follow the procedures *and in addition* send a letter certified mail return receipt requested stating that you will withhold rent / consider the lease terminated if they don't fix it within seven days after receipt.
