No. His adoptive Mother ( I assume you mean a true adoptive mother) is his Mother, just as if born by blood. She has the duty to raise this child. Parents are meant to be friends with their children, they are meant to be parents.
If the mother agrees to let him stay with you, then no legal issue need arise. However, if she says otherwise, you will be subject to legal action if you act against her wishes.
