I am an international student.
Got work authorization (i-765) after completion of masters on dec 2015.
I may have to file for i-765 extension on jan 2017
I am hearing lot of things about this i-765 extension, such as
1. If you are working as a contractor, you would not be eligible for extension.
2. Even though you file for extension it will get denied. Only full time employees will be getting extension.
If you are talking about an OPT work permit, you will be deemed out of status if you are not properly employed for 90 days or longer. Consult with an attorney.

Contact your DSO and/or US immigration attorney about your OPT questions. If this is an I765 in most other circumstances, the type of work you do is not an issue.
Speak to an immigration attorney or your DSO about your OPT questions as it relates to your current status and find out what your options are.
