Previous property taken through bank fraud causing me to be disabled, and homeless. After receiving disability I got a rental, and paid Edison a $220. deposit. Before receiving my first bill My power was shut off yesterday. Called Edison to discover it is shut off due to other property remaining $949. owed. I was evicted, and owners used the property without switching the power over till they rented it out.
You might have a small claims case for the bill against the other person. It is your responsibility to inform the utility company to stop service. Usually the new owner does this because it is not right to think someone else will pay your bill and they are afraid that the power will go off without warning.
Please consult or retain a lawyer for your particular issue.

If the electricity was in your name, then it is your responsibility to have the power shut off prior to moving out. Your only option here is to pay the $949 owed, so you can have your own power restored. Then, you will have to bring a small claims action against your former landlord to recover the monies you paid to the electric company.
