Am I protected under first Amendment as an F1 student if I peacefully criticize US government on my social media?

Agree with my colleague. If you seek to change your status or even extend your F, social media can be examined. You also have to give your handles when entering the US if asked by CBP.
It really depends on what you are saying. If you call the President a dummy, nobody will even notice. If you go around tweeting that you support freedom fighters in their jihad against the Great American Satan, you may have problems with other government agencies besides USCIS.
