I just got out of federal prison after 5 years (wrongful conviction, not related to finance or taxes). I had the misfortune of buying a brand new vehicle just months before my incarceration. When I came home, I realized there were 5 years of personal property taxes on my car that Fairfax County wants me to pay. The registration expired in 2010 and no one drove the vehicle the entire time. Am I still responsible for the entire amount of the property taxes even if I was incapable of driving the vehicle?
Seems like for the given years you were incarcerated, you'd be eligible for at least some type of car tax relief, whether because of lack of income, or personal use. See the attached link.
I'd call the Department of Tax Administration at 703-222-8234 and ask them about car tax relief if I were you.
I used to live in Falls Church - great place. Good luck and I'm so glad to hear you were released from your wrongful conviction! Sorry you had to go through that.
