Co-worker, who was actually my boss, was being investigated for some serious issues. He resigned in the midst of the investigation, thus the investigation about his issues stopped. Since I worked directly underneath him, there are rumors swirling around about me, but the investigation had nothing to do with me and I'm 100% innocent. I'd like tell co-workers and colleagues pieces and bits of the investigation (because I was interrogated) to end these damaging rumors and clarify what actually happened and explain to them I was in no way implicated in the investigation.
If you speak about the investigation and your employer is unhappy about that, it can terminate your employment. You should speak to the person who was in charge of the investigation and state that there are rumors and talk that implicate you and are negative and that you would appreciate it if employer would issue a statement or discuss with you how to handle and clear your name.
Legally, you aren't prevented from discussing such an investigation unless you were told your portion was confidential, or you signed some sort of confidentiality agreement relating to the investigation. I agree with the previous comment that you should probably avoid discussing it if there could be backlash. If you feel strongly about it, you should discuss it with someone in HR, since the employee rumors/gossip should be addressed.
If no one told you that you needed to keep the information you gained through the investigation process secret, it is likely that there would be no legal implications if you revealed that information. Be careful though. First, you may have signed confidentiality agreements as early as the start of your employment that protect the information within the investigation. Second, speaking about the investigation may not be well received by your employer. I agree with previous posters, that it is likely in your best interest to speak with someone responsible for the investigation about the rumors and get their advice on how best to address them.
